Pre-Bariatric Evaluation
A pre-bariatric evaluation is a comprehensive psychological assessment designed to examine emotional, behavioral, and psychosocial factors that may influence readiness for weight-loss surgery. This evaluation is commonly required prior to bariatric procedures such as gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy.

The assessment focuses on identifying factors that may affect adjustment, adherence, and coping before and after surgery. By addressing potential concerns in advance, the evaluation supports informed decision-making, preparation for lifestyle changes, and a clearer understanding of individual strengths and areas for support throughout the weight-loss process.

During the pre-bariatric evaluation, the clinician conducts a comprehensive psychosocial assessment focused on factors that may influence surgical readiness and post-operative adjustment. Areas commonly explored include mental health history, eating patterns, motivation for surgery, coping strategies, and the individual’s capacity to adapt to the lifestyle changes associated with bariatric procedures.

The evaluation also considers the individual’s support system, including access to emotional, social, and practical supports, as well as readiness to seek guidance when needed throughout the weight-loss process. Following completion of the psychosocial assessment, the medical team reviews the evaluation findings as part of the overall determination of surgical candidacy.
When surgery is approved, participation in nutrition education and ongoing counseling support is often recommended to help individuals prepare for surgery and navigate the behavioral and lifestyle changes necessary for long-term adjustment.
